Be a Flu Fighter This Fall and Winter

Each year as Australia weathers its flu season from May to September, U.S. health experts keep a watchful eye for clues on what to expect during our upcoming flu season. This year, the data suggests cases could start circulating early and be more severe than in recent years.

Given the unpredictable nature of forecasting our flu season, and with COVID-19 continuing to circulate, Thompson Health Director of Infection Prevention/Emergency Preparedness Kristen Beideman said everyone should get a flu shot “to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their community.”

“A person can be infected with COVID-19 and influenza at the same time, making the need for protection that much more important,” she said.

As with every flu season, it’s important to not only get vaccinated but also to:

  • Get vaccinated early
  • Practice good respiratory etiquette
  • Be diligent about washing your hands

The standard 2022-2023 vaccine provides protection against four flu viruses. There is a high-dose flu vaccine option for those 65 and older which contains additional antigen designed to create a stronger immune response.

A list of upcoming Thompson-hosted flu clinics can be found at www.ThompsonHealth.com/Flu. The Canandaigua Medical Group Pharmacy – an affiliate of our hospital located at 335 Parrish Street –  provides flu shots as well; visit www.ThompsonHealth.com/Pharmacy for hours.

According to Kristen, stay home if you are sick and contact your primary care provider about getting tested for both COVID-19 and the flu. We have three urgent care centers in our region to help care for your family if necessary; information can be found at www.ThompsonHealth.com/UrgentCare.
